Perhaps the heavens have some answers.   From the heavens comes the purest water in the world – rainwater.  There is no higher quality source of water available, and in fact, some experts say that people are more likely to contract illness from drinking mains water compared to rainwater.  But can the heavens meet all our water needs?

Massive amounts of water – it could be as much as 50 000 litres a year – can be collected from the roof of an average-sized home and used to supply part of domestic water needs.  All it takes is a simple rainwater tank that collects run-off from the roof and stores it appropriately – and this can be a sustainable source of water for use both inside and outside a home.   

Rainwater tanks come in many different sizes and types, both pre-made and made-to-order, so they can fit virtually any space.  From narrow and tall tanks that fit against a wall or fence, underground tanks, bladder tanks that sit under decks or floors to slimline tanks for tight, cramped spaces.

Another way to save water and save costs is to re-use your ‘grey’ water.  By simply re-directing water that’s used in bathing, showering, dishwashing and laundry to the garden, people are saving thousands of dollars every year in water and power bills.   Figures from Australia show that around 400 litres of grey water are produced daily by an average Australian home – so imagine the savings if that was harnessed and re-used.  It is however, important to note that the laws governing the use and application of grey water vary from state to state, so it’s worth doing the homework before making any changes.

The United States Air Force Academy is located on more than 18,400 beautifully maintained acres, on the East edge of the Rocky Mountains, in Colorado. Each year a new group of cadets are indoctrinated at the US Air Force Academy, at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Much of the more than 18,000 acres operates as other military bases, The Air Force Academy is both a university and military in station, in particular, the 10th Air Base Wing. The area that houses the superintendent, commandant, dean of faculty, and cadet wing resemble a civilian university.

The Superintendent is the Academy’s commanding officer, and is responsible for cadet military training, academic, athletic, and character development programs.

The Commandant monitors the more than 4,400 cadets, in addition to the 300 members of support staff.

More than 500 courses relating to 32 academic subject areas are controlled by the Dean of Commandants.

The 10th Air Base Wing (10th ABW)is comprised of more than 2,100 military, civilian, and contract personnel. The 10th ABW activities include law enforcement, civil engineering, communications, logistics, military and civilian personnel operations, and a clinic and hospital round out the services at the US Air Force Academy.

The Academy is considered as an ‘open’ base, and each year, thousands of people visit the Academy. The Academy’s Visitor Center has historical photos and educational information on display. An informative and educational film can be enjoyed by visitors in the comfortable theater. The Cadet Chapel is open to the public, and the massive sheets of glass that compose the construction of the chapel has been described as an architect wonder.

Visitors are also welcome to visit the Honor Court, Cadet Field House, Arnold Hall, Falcon Athletic Center, the Association of Graduates Building, and Falcon Stadium. Along the way, visitors can stop at several scenic overlooks that provide an unobstructed view of the spacious plains to the East, and the massive Rocky Mountains to the West.

The 306th Flying Training Group (FTG), located at the Academy, screens aviator candidates prior to entrance into the Undergraduate Flight Training program. The 306 FTG provides powered flight soaring and parachuting training to more than 2,500 cadets.

The Cadet dining facility, Mitchell Hall, is on of the largest dining facilities in the world, covering more than 1.7 acres. Three of the glass walls extend from the floor to the ceiling in this dining facility. Each year, more than 3 million meals are prepared and served, and 100,000 box lunches are prepared in support of Cadet Wing programs and activities.

Cadets march into Mitchell Hall, nine abreast. One waiter is in attendance to serve 10 tables. When the cadets take their seats, the meal is served family-style, and is finish the meal in 20 minutes. The entire operation is accomplished by more than 200 civil service employees.

It can also be grown on land that is not suitable for other types of crops so it does not compete for valuable farm land. Growth rates vary based on the type of algae and its environment, but it can grow 20 to 30 times faster than conventional crops such as corn and soybeans with a harvest cycle of as little as 10 days. The harvested algae is then processed into “green crude” oil.

Reports of oil yield per acre per year for green crude vary wildly from 5,000 to 150,000 gallons. One company, Valcent Products, claims that 150,000 gallons of green crude per acre is possible using a carefully controlled, closed loop system. Actual yields, though, currently top out at about 33,000 gallons per acre per year. Even by conservative estimates, it would take about 40,000 square miles of land to produce enough green crude oil to completely replace the United States’ consumption of conventional oil. That’s an area about the size of the state of Tennessee.

One of the most compelling things about Algae fuel is that it is a drop-in replacement for conventional gasoline. It can be used in conventional automobiles with absolutely no modifications to the engine. There is no need to develop a new distribution system for delivering algae fuel to consumers as the same trucks, gas stations, pumps, holding tanks, etc. can be leveraged. Logistically, algae fuel is as close to the corner gas station as any alternative to oil today. The US alone boasts over 30 companies researching, developing, and even producing algae fuel. One company, Sapphire Energy, launched a cross country tour of vehicles running on algae fuel on Sep 18, 2009.

If anyone needs evidence of this fact, one only needs to look at the aftermath of the flooding Monday morning after Ondoy has passed and the floodwaters have already ebbed. The price of conventional crude oil is still at a level that does not compel consumers to move to a new form of energy that is not significantly cheaper, but the next time the price of gasoline spikes to double or triple today’s levels, algae fuel will be well positioned to move into the main stream
